Amtrak very-high-up terminated?
Author: GenePoon

A very high-up Amtrak official has been terminated, according to an as-yet unconfirmed but usually solid source. No name for now until verification, other than to say it is NOT Boardman.

ADDENDUM/CONFIRMATION, nine minutes later:

And just that quickly: confirmation that it's Chief Operating Officer Bill Crosbie. Effective immediately his subordinates are reporting directly to CEO Joe Boardman.

That sounds like an "escorted out of the building" type of termination. Nasty.

And there's more to come, stay tuned.

Hopefully Labor Retaliations will be restructured as well.

Amtrak policy for termination of non-union employees is to not give them any advance notice and have security escort them off the property.

Been there done that! (They had the same policy at a company where I got RIF'd.)

I figured that, but didn't say anything until I saw proof:

No one likes to hear of someone losing a job. Still, Amtrak has got to be the most management heavy "corporations" in the US!

No worst company for too much management has to be IBM... Without a doubt.

I remember meeting this guy one time when he was riding with Gunn on the back of one of my trains. First impressions usually speak volumes, and he didn't impress me one bit as a high ranking official with the corporation. Gunn, on the other hand, was very personable, and seemed genuinely interested in his fellow employees. For what it's worth.

Crosbie survived for a lot of years. It's a bit of a surprise to see him abruptly terminated now. That having been said, I've met Crosbie a number of times, and I was always left wondering just what the attraction was for Amtrak. He does have a railroad background, but he seemed young and unassertive.

I was not a fan of Crosbie and felt that he often stymied operations (i.e. not aggressive in looking for opportunities or solve issues around the topic of growth).

I think Gunn brought him in from CP in Calgary. He may also have been at TTC.

From what I hear, he was temperamental, had a knock-down, drag-out fight in Gunn's office with CMO Jon Klein (who was no sweetheart either), and the latter quit/retired/got-fired that day.

Others on T.O have said he was once on a northbound Florida train, which got dirty with disgusting bathrooms per usual, and the OBS people did not seem to care that "you know who" was onboard.

Gunn was well known for late night check ups on bus barns, subway shops, end of the line lounges, etc. He expected people would be doing their work, and was happy to speak with just about anybody. But, G*d help the guys sound asleep or washing their personal cars etc on the company's dime.

why should they?

service may be part of their name, but it doesn't mean they need to provide it.

what's gonna happen? the guy complains. to their boss's boss's boss. he sends a memo to their boss. the boss tells them to be more careful when big shots are around. Nobody gets fired, no penalty, so why be concerned?

I hear ya Lackawanna, but I for one just hope they get people in there that can make Amtrak grow and improve, not this crap that's been goin' on! I know there's some impreovments, but I'm hopin' that one Amtrak official who just thinks Amtrak should be gone gets fired too!

Per the request of Don Phillips, well known columnist for TRAINS
Magazine, he has asked me to post the following:

I am told that Mr. Crosbie and Boardman had a low-key discussion and he left the building calmly under his own power. He wasn't "escorted" out, as some apparently have heard. A friend at Amtrak (who I trust) asked me to spread that around because the rumor, which apparently began on Trainorders, seems to be getting blown out of proportion. His departure wasn't much of a surprise to anyone internally, I'm told, including Crosbie.
