Passenger Trains > Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it?Date: 11/17/10 11:48 Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: edsaalig The clip came from Clyde Anderson's outstanding collection of SF passenger trains. Is there a possible stack fire on the DC-191. Seems like to trails of smoke??

I think the Santa Fe's RDCs ran there after being rebuilt from the LA wreck. They finished off their careers on the former El Pasoan route out of Albuquerque.
Dave Date: 11/17/10 13:18 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: KB6GZ Seems to me I rode one of these between LA and San Diego in the 1950's when I was a kid. Is my memory correct?
Rick San Diego Date: 11/17/10 13:21 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: edsaalig Yes, they ran from May 21, 1952 until the accident on Sunday, January 22, 1956. Have any photos??
Date: 11/17/10 13:27 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: ATSF3751 I believe it to be Rincon, NM. But, regardless of which station, it is on the El Paso line.

Thanks Shriners. Rick Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/17/10 13:29 by KB6GZ. Date: 11/17/10 15:00 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: TorchLake edsaalig Wrote:

Author: edsaalig What was the history on the car when it came to MARC?. I understand that two running RDC cars (one being the 9918, ex-DC191) were purchased from B&O along with the DC-192 which at that time was a parts car. This first two were purchased for $5 each and the parts car for $1. I do not believe that the DC-191 was ever run by MARC, but what happen after that I don't know. Can you give me any history on the 191??

Can you give me > any history on the 191?? The B&O ran the car out of Pittsburgh on the PATrain until that service ended, and then it was sent to Maryland. I do not know for certain, but $1 transfers are common when UMTA (presently FTA) funds are involved. The other car you may be thinking of is the 9913, which was never relettered MARC and was the last CSX owned RDC. The 192 never made it to MARC, I have a vague recollection it was scrapped near Indianapolis in the 1970's, but I could be wrong. As part of a trade for 20 reconditioned type H couplers (during the nine months when Buckeye Steel Castings was shut down, and the couplers could not be gotten anywhere)the DC-191 was sent to Illinois Transit Assembly Corp. The owner of ITA knew the history of the car and wanted to make sure it went to a museum, and it was sent to California. It may have been moved a few times, but I think it is presently at Pacific Railroad Society. TL Date: 11/17/10 18:38 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: edsaalig Here is the time line as I know it. Help me out on the missing dates. Sometime in the Winter of 1981, PAT discontinues leasing 9918 from the B&O and returns the car. In Mid-Spring, 1984, DC-192 is at the Conrail car shops in Reading, Pennsylvania. Conrail hired a contractor to scrap the car. On January 8, 1993, MARC officially "retires" 9918 and removes it from the roster. I don't know the date that MARC purchased the DC-191. Can you help me on the date? On April 15, 1995, 9918 is acquired by Kasten Rail Car Services of Edwardsville Il. The company later is renamed ITAC. On May 15, 2001, ITAC makes an offer to the Pacific Railroad Society to trade the 9918 ex- SF DC-191 for their ex-Illinois Central Pullman car Bloomington. On January 4, 2002, PRS accepts ITAC's offer. Currently we have have the car and are restoring it.

According to another post by edsaalig from five days ago, June 1965: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,2317866 I think the location of the video is Los Lunas, NM, with the train headed north toward Albuquerque (railroad eastbound). There aren't enough tracks, the main line is too straight, the depot's eaves are too wide, and the door and window pattern is wrong for it to be Rincon: http://www.trainorders.com/images2/view.php?300417 Date: 11/17/10 21:43 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? These vehicles would be characterized as gross polluters in 2010. Date: 11/17/10 22:56 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: scottp edsaalig Wrote:

> > TL > > (former equipment inspector, MARC Train Service) > (last owner of DC-191; but we did not run it) Well, yes, but I would say that perhaps the fuel mixture was a wee bit rich, which along with the altitude on this line combined to make for a smoky acceleration. Those big inline six-cylinder Detroits weren't turbocharged, were they? timecruncher Date: 11/18/10 09:26 Re: Rare footage of SF RDC -Where is it? Author: TorchLake edsaalig Wrote:

I will not be able to help out with any specific dates, but wheen I started as a contractor to MARC in early 1990 this car was already not running, and it had a heat-induced (6-110 fire) center-sill crack you could stick your fist into. The date of January 8, 1993 is the date of last run of all RDC's at MARC (I have a cancelled ticket and the special "diploma" passed out to the riders on the run). 9918 was also unusual for having a permanent cab installation, not the ususal bicycle seat used by most of the RDC's. It may not be obvious from the photos, but the warbonnet was peeking through the black end paint by the time the car left Maryland. The actual date of transfer to MARC may be moot; most likely, after the lease was with PATrain was up 9918 went to Riverside Shops to be a parts car, and after the initial transfers of RDC's to MARC, the few stragglers were afterthoughts on the quadrenial operating contract renegotiations to clean up CSX's books, and this would have been when the 9913 and 9918 could have been transferred for a buck. Author: SAMaase Here are a few pics of DC-191 in storage at PRS as of 3 or 4 years ago. I paid them a visit when they had an open house to display a Santa Fe Hi-Level car they're also restoring.
