J would have extended the half-percent sales tax authorized by Measure R in 2008 that was due to expire in 2029 for another 30 years. The idea was that LA Metro could use the anticipated revenue from the tax in the far future to borrow money for transit projects which could start in the next few years. The opposition came from an assortment of special-interest groups that reminded me of the old cliche about "Politics makes strange bedfellows."
