More of the Iowa Pacific Santa Cruz train
Author: Evan_Werkema

Given the on and off rain that accompanied the special train that ran between Watsonville and Santa Cruz, CA on the 17th (see http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,2920172 , http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,2919904 , and http://sccrtc.org/projects/rail/right-on-track/ ), I didn't get very thorough video coverage of the run (it's a tape camera and I worry about letting it get too wet). The attached video intersperses still photos and blather with video to try to make a more complete picture. This is the low-def version.

Thanks for your efforts. I only once got a chance to ride a train to Santa Cruz once , way back in 1963 (?). It was a special train and what a ride. Got to stand on the open platform at the rear and speeding along south of San Jose was great. Nothing like jointed rail at 79! Maybe some of the other geezers on this board have photos of that trip? What does the future hold for this line? I sure hope things work out for a resumption of some freight as well as passenger in some form. Hats off to Iowa Pacific for putting together such a classy train.

I see Elrond Lawrence made a cameo appearance in the video ;>)

Nicely done!

Very Cool Evan!!

Now we've got to pursue getting a couple
Nathan Fivechimes for those F units.

Maybe one M and one o/c P.

Manifold Restricters are probably a must to keep the
loudness down and tender ears happy along the line.

GREAT video Evan!! Yep, Elrond was there and best of all, his daughter Kat is in the cast for the Christmastown train runs. She apparently was an elf in yesterday's event. Hope he posts some pics of her!

Well done Evan, that closing scene is fantastic. Love the IC'ish paint scheme. Hope they can do the whole train like that.

Thanks folks! Just noticed I made a goof in the script - the excursions were a five mile roundtrip WEST of Santa Cruz, not east.

Going back to the SP days, a train going from Santa Cruz to Davenport was an eastbound move, so in a historical SP sorta context you were correct, even if not so much geographically...

Superb, job, Evan, great writing and editing. What is the heritage of the passenger cars? Mike Pechner

They should be as follows from west to east:

1. SLRG 133 "Chambersburg Inn," built as PRR sleeper 8251 by Budd in 1949, later rebuilt as a coach.

http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,2919433

2. Mid America Railcar Leasing "Mohave," built as AT&SF coach 2826 by Budd in 1953, rebuilt by Mid-America as a "lounge."

3. Mid America Railcar Leasing "Golden Sand," built as SP coach 2378 by Budd in 1950.

4. Mid America Railcar Leasing "Silver Larch," built as CB&Q sleeper 4743 by Budd in 1948, converted to a coach in 1963.

5. Mid America Railcar Leasing "Bryce Canyon," built as UP coach 5489 by AC&F in 1960.

Thanks, Evan, for your very polished stills, video and narration.... A trainorders/Winterail "short!" Looking forward to checking out my beloved IC colors firsthand, soon!
