"Some More Holiday Trains"...
Author: aussiehinz

On this Sunday following Thanksgiving, traditionally the busiest travel day of the year, I decided to hang right here around "MH" Tower and Chicago's South Loop to watch the show. If you are a fan of Amtrak's "Heritage" schemed P42's, or passenger trains in general, Chicago was certainly the place to be today. "Heritage" units 822, 156, and 145 all put in an appearance, and 66 is around here too, currently assigned to the Lincoln Service corridor between Chicago & St. Louis. Extra trains to Michigan and to Quincy and added equipment on several other corridor and long distance trains also made for a very interesting day. Here are a few "catches" from the South Side...

Cheers, and hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving, wherever your travels took you.

1. #851, the "Hoosier State" from Indianapolis, turns at "MH" with an eclectic consist, including spotless Pacific Region P59PH #463 in tow... November 25, 2012

2. Next to turn in front of "MH" was Lincoln Service Train #300, the first morning arrival from St. Louis. Today, "Heritage" P42 #156 was helping out.

3. A few minutes later, #49, the westbound "Lake Shore Limited" made its turn with "Heritage" P42 #822 trailing. That's the arriving "Saluki," Train #390 from Carbondale, drifting down the St. Charles Air Line ramp above #49.

4. Another view of #851 as it waits for a signal at 17th Street to continue its turn and head for the washer.

5. Another view of #49 at 17th Street, heading out of the wye and onto the main to complete turning.

6. Train #303, the 9:25 am Lincoln Service to St. Louis, passes under Roosevelt Road on time this morning.

7. Amtrak Train #390, the northbound "Saluki," crosses Metra's Rock Island District at 16th Street Tower, utilizing the St. Charles Air Line to access the BNSF and ultimately, Union Station.

8. At 2:03 PM, the westbound "California Zephyr" passes "MH" on its way to California.

9. A few minutes later, its counterpart, #6, arrives on time with PV "Northern Sky" on the tail end. Kind thanks to "cozephyr" for the advance word on this one.

Nice shots there...

In the Hoosier State pic, is it possible that #463 and the first 2 cars are coming from Beech Grove?

Yes. Highly likely. 51/851 is always one to watch because of this common occurrence.

tr 851 has eng eng 463 2nd out; probably released from Beech Grove
and coach 34073, very likely fresh out of the Grove;
the second car is buffer 10405, a former 10&6 sleeper

Aussiehinz:

You always take some great photos of trains in and out of Chicago. Thanks for sharing them with us as I am no longer able to get out there to the Windy City myself.

Kind thanks for your encouragement, John, and to all the others who have taken the time to post positive comments regarding these ongoing views of the vibrant Chicago rail scene. It is much appreciated, and I am happy to continue sharing anything I think might be of interest to those with a soft spot for the Windy City.
