Passenger Trains > Caltrain Disposing of Their GP9 Duo

The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board will be accepting bids until 12/11 on the purchase and removal of their two GP9's JPBX 500 and 501. Now is your chance to grab a couple of SP first generation veterans:

The pair have seen very limited use on work trains and as rescue power in recent years with MP15's 503 and 504 getting almost all the assignments. Three photos from the past few years show the 500 at speed between San Carlos and Redwood City, out on the Dumbarton line, and in Burlingame.

Donate 'em to the new NWP--help us taxpayers.

NWP needs a couple more Railpower Gensets, not GP-9 junk!

For the sake of posterity they should go to Niles, and repainted scarlet and grey, but that's only my opinion.

Brightside Yard (NCRY) is crowded, so I don't know if there's room there, but a scarlet & grey high-nose Geep run by the Iowa Pacific in Santa Cruz would have been my choice.

Just out of curiosity, what does a GP9 go for these days? I have no clue what the ballpark range is.

Looks like the price range is about $120,000 to $180,000. That Sterling on-line catalog has an amazing variety of locomotives--everyting from "critters" to SD-40s.

Really, REALLY???

Let's see...

Thousands and thousand of miles and hours on them.
Rebuilt at least 3 times in their life.
Rode hard and put away wet on Caltrain with minimal maintenance.
501 has a bent frame.
They do NOT meet current tier whatever standards and can only be operated under limited use.
Little historic value seeing as how SP GP-9s are hardly a rarity.
Fuel hogs.

I'll give em' scrap price, which is about $200/ton.
Not that I'll scrap em, I'm just sayin that's what they're worth.

I presume that the Sterling price is the "asking price"; whether it's "firm" or "WTH" (Willing To Haggle) I'll leave to others--I'm not in the market for a locomotive right now.
