ODOT Talgo Train on the Move to Pueblo
Author: SilverPeakRail

Heads up for those of you living along the WSOR. The first of Oregon's Talgo Train sets will leave North Milwaukee late this afternoon bound for interchange with BNSF Crawford, WI on Saturday. The consist includes an eclectic collection of Amtrak cars, 3 on each end as braking idlers, and the Talgo train set in the middle. WSOR 3802 is the initial power. Perhaps someone will post some photos taken tomorrow out west of Janesville? Happy Hunting!

Will each Talgo VIII set be tested @ Pueblo or only this one?

Only one is needed for certification.

Is that the Talgo with the control cab that's as ugly as sin?

Yup, should be. No aesthetic value at all - just ugly. Hopefully its dreadful looks give it some advantage for the crew.

Do the Orgeon sets include any homely cab cars, or is that just Governor Walker's unwanted stepchildren ?

Will the new trainsets merely allow a shuffle so Amtrak Cascades can run additional trains between Seattle and Portland? Isn't this corridor going to be considered "maxed out" very soon by BNSF standards? This is what I had heard from the Coast Starlight crew a while back. I know modifications would have to be made, but several people bound for Portland on the train mentioned that they'd like to see an Amtrak train running between Portland and out east along the Columbia River on the Oregon side (opposite timing of the Empire Builder). Again, I think this is fantasy, but it was interesting to hear the discussion on it. And then there's always been the discussion of running a "day train" to from Seattle to Spokane. But that would require more than just the ODOT Talgo trains. Likely two additional Talgos IF Washington decides to buy/lease them from Wisconsin pending if the current sets meant to operate in Wisconsin actually do.

How about some stories (rumors) from Oregon? The two new Oregon trainsets won't provide any "additional" service for a couple of years. They "will" allow one (or two) train sets to be taken out of service for major servicing. At the present time when a set is taken out of service a Superliner set has to be provided for the Vancouver, B.C. run.

Rumors down Oregon way are that Washington won't add "additional" service until the line past Fort Lewis is put into service. How many years out is that?

Nothing to do with additional Talgos but the schedules may be changed in Oregon. There are thoughts that an early morning train from Portland to Eugene would do better than the present late evening #509. There seems to be a morning south from Salem to Eugene market. (maybe a couple extra Talgos would provide some slack time so there could be an all day layover in Eugene for an evening return trip north)

Here's a shot of that "control cab" or whatever it is called as it waited in the fog at Spring Green, Wisconsin on Saturday morning.
