Amtrak Bike Policy on Surfliners
Author: zuco74

Amtrak has decided NOT to charge for Bicycles on the Pacific Surfliner, though reservations will still be required. This is good news as everyone I spoke to about this was a tad disappointed in the 5 dllr fee Amtrak was originally going to charge. This goes into effect June 1 .

Good News....bikes and public transport are natural allies.

Like $5 is a big deal.

Here in the Midwest, Amtrak has charged $10 per bike for a long time. You make the reservation online. Real simple.

When I've ridden rush hour Surfliners it looks to me like most bikeriders are commuters. $5 or $10 per trip would make commuting cost prohibitive. Perhaps it would be reasonable to sell a monthly bike pass for a nominal fee to fund the reservation system.

Please do not compare apples to oranges.

Amtrak charges everywhere for putting a bike in the baggage car/compartment.

This is in regards to bikes not in/as baggage but in the normal cars.

BART has announced it will allow bikes on its trains at all times. That's an expansion of their non-rush hours only policy
