My wife is visiting a friend in Hollister. What's the nearest rail service into San Francisco? Does she need to get to San Jose and then take CalTrain, or what? Is there service from closer to Hollister? Thanks.

Weekday mornings -- early! -- there are several Caltrain trains from Gilroy to San Francisco. But for all day service it would be Caltrain from San Jose. There are also some buses that run from the Monterey area along Highway US 101 to the San Jose station. The closest stop on this line to Hollister might be Prunedale.

Here is the OFFICIAL Caltrain - Gilroy, CA station entry on the caltrain dot com website.
According to this the NORTHBOUND ONLY departures are at
6:07 AM--6:28AM--and 7:05 AM
http://www.caltrain.com/stations/gilroystation.html

You will need to travel to the major SAN JOSE DIRIDON STATION for Passenger Rail Service
at ANY other time of day.
San Jose Dirodon Staion on Cahill Street is about 47 miles North of Hollister, CA via the rubber tires and roadway.
SAN JOSE DIRIDON Station also has Amtrak California Corridor service as the Amtrak Capitol COrridor,
ACE COmmuter Rail, VTA Light Rail service within the local San Jose Area ,
and of course Caltrain commuter Rail service which mainly runs
San Francisco to San Jose with peak hour GIlroy service == NORTH in early AM and SOUTH in PM dinner hour :

Since we have lived here in Prunedale for 15 years I assure you that there are no train tracks close to us and the only stop(s) would be Caltrain in Gilroy or Amtrak #11/14 in Salinas. I don't believe that the ATK buses stop here in Prunedale.

Ask Carol for a ride.

"Diridon" station is annoying to me. He isn't even dead yet. I call it San Jose. It's simple and to the point.

Monterey-Salinas Transit bus from Monterey to San Jose stops in Prunedale 3 times daily. Here's the schedule.

Amtrak's web site lists "curbside" stations for bus extensions of Capitol Corridor trains at both Gilroy and Prunedale.
The website has locations for each.
The timetable for the CC shows six station stops at each one in each direction.
If your friend were to book a bus-train-bus connection to Oakland and San Francisco they could do it with one ticket.
Or just go to Oakland and get on BART.
Amtrak cannot sell bus-only transportation.
