Amtrak NEC shut down at Susquehanna River Bridge
Author: GenePoon

The Northeast Corridor is closed...following information is from MARC:

> Due to a tugboat strike of the Susquehanna River Bridge, all traffic
> is being held south of Perryville until the bridge is inspected.
> Delays of some significance may be experienced as a result of this
> hold. More information will follow as it is made available.

> Due to the strike of the Susquehanna River Bridge, MARC 548 has
> terminated service at Edgewood Station. Passengers continuing north
> to Aberdeen and Perryville are requested to use the taxi cabs which
> have been dispatched and to save your receipts so that MARC can
> reimburse your costs.

-MARC

Amtrak, as usual, is silent but its traffic is halted. Trains 55(21)
and 198(21) were approaching the bridge but now are at zero mph,
stopped until inspection can confirm the condition of the bridge.

UPDATE: Amtrak Trains 55(21), 198(21), 50(20), 2175(21) and 187(21) all
have been placed in Service Disruption status account line closure
at the Susquehanna River Bridge.

Wait, MARC pays for taxis when service is disrupted? Wow.

I hope the tugboat owner ends up paying for the taxis

Bridge inspection completed, line reopened for traffic.

The most-delayed trains lost approximately 90 minutes.

Not always. Usually the passengers are handled on later MARC trains, or a following
Amtrak train stops to entrain the stranded passengers and makes extra stops to handle MARC
passengers. But this was the last northbound MARC train of the day, and Amtrak trains
were just as dead in the water. MARC does not consider "No Alternate Transportation"
to be proper.

I'm sure stranding passengers at West Podunk is a wonderful way to assure lots of never again travelers. Being perceived as "unreliable" is a great way to drive passengers to other alternatives.
