Empire Builder contaminated by ill passenger
Author: GenePoon

Due to an ill passenger, Amtrak Train 8(21) has been contaminated; the contamination
will need to be professionally cleaned before Amtrak employees will be permitted to
enter to prepare it for the equipment's next departure. Amtrak management was
undecided as of a while ago, as to whether the entire train will have to be turned
over to contractors, or only selected cars (the one the passenger was riding in,
the diner and the lounge).

Where, When, Why, and How?

Maybe they will have to bus tomorrow's 7 & 8 between Chicago and ST Paul, and turn the next #8 into #7 at St Paul if Chicago is short a train set..

What sort of "contamination"-anyone know?

Given the bland description I might suggest TB. Intestinal nasties wouldn't get this sort of notice. Other diseases might be of a tropical nature but I'd bet on tuberculosis

How were things handled on board? I see the train is still on the move and has not arrived Chicago yet as of this post.

Hope it's not ebola, hanta, rabies, MRSA, naegleria, mad-cow, leprosy, botulism or polio.

Probably not unlike the "Norovirus" incidents from cruise ships (and it occurs a lot more places that).

Probably shouldn't have offered Mr. Creosote a wafer thin mint after dinner.

Maybe they were sick and tired of it being late. Good excuse to cancel the trip.

AFAIK, they will run a #7, but as of 3:45 this afternoon (1.5 hrs late) it hasn't left CUS. Don't know if the delay is related to this "contamination" incident or not. There was no outward evidence of any problem when #8 made its station stop in Glenview last night just after 7 p.m. The crew and detraining passengers behaved exactly as they usually do and no one said anything was amiss.

UPDATE: #7(24) departed CHI at 4:02 p.m. CDT, 1 hr 47 mins late.

What is the source for the "contamination" incident? We have nothing so far beyond a single person's unattributed and unsubstantiated report. Your comments about Glenview are telling.
