Amtrak 828 on Freight to Wilmington
Author: NewRiverGeorge

P40 828 has left Beech Grove in freight service on CSX. Believed to be the permanent "training" unit for Amtrak University in Wilmington. It was previously in storage at BEE, and before that at Bear. This should free up a road-compliant engine for revenue service.

There never was a training unit to my knowledge. It will reduce field trips to other terminals to find diesels to visit.

Was it overhauled and repainted? Any pictures of it?

Phase IV, nice and rusty and non-operational.

Yes there used to be a "spare" sitting at Wilmington, or brought in as needed. Evidently it was pulled back in the day, but nobody ever told me.

Last time I actually had a friend go up there for classes was a couple of years ago.

828 was supposed to have been repainted, but I also hesitate to make any assumptions that there is money in the budget to do it.

Perhaps at least somebody will go to Walmart and buy a few gallons of Wink to get the rust streaks off. Is there a Walmart close by to Choo-Choo U?

Unless plans changed and it was painted overnight, it went out in Phase IV. Plans were to make the brake system operable to get it across the road and that was it.
