Departed Chicago with crew having inadequate Hours of Service to reach Indianapolis.

Sat at Lafayette waiting for dogcatch...which was stuck on I-65 behind a jackknifed
semi with hazmat load. Unable to recrew train for two hours.

This is by far better than having a fresh crew on board in Chicago.

Q642 was ahead of the Cardinal by 30 minutes through McCoysburg and #50 had to follow the train into Lafayette yard. Now the dispatcher could have put Q642 into the siding at Monon, but why do that. Q642 usually follows Amtrak, even when they are running 2 hours late out of Chicago, but it's been weird the few days out here.

That's hardly relevant since they sat in Lafayette for a crew for nearly 2 hours.

So your saying that if the Cardinal didn't have to follow the freight, it couldn't recrew down the line further? Got into Lafayette 54 minutes late.

Love that brilliant freight couldnt have delayed a passenger train deduction at work here...

Right. The job is set up to recrew at Lafayette. A daily recrew goes on duty and drives to Lafayette. It was en route that the recrew got stuck. It's not a new thing, so no, the freight made no difference.

Is it possible that the freight train would not have fit in the siding at Monon without blocking road crossings? Since the switches are hand throw switches, perhaps it was quicker to keep the freight train moving than have it stop and hand line switches. Just a thought.

West pass at Monon was blocked. Once Q642 got by Surrey Siding the die was cast. Cardinal had to follow Q642 to Lafayette. The Monon badly needs additional sidings.

The former Monon needs a wee bit of track work as well, especially north of Lafayette. Last time I rode the line it felt like we were airborne at the TP&W crossing!

Now CSX has the ore trains to deal with. 51 lost an additional 2+ hours today waiting on 500-30 at West Pass.

Is this "500" a K500 or something? Because at first I thought 500 might be a typo for 50.
