These look MUCH worse than what the Alaska media put on their websites
when the story broke, and are probably closer to the reality than
what the tourism-based leadership wanted to get out.

The reports of passengers being pulled from the river now may have some
credence.

Holy s---! That looks really bad for trains that almost never exceed 20-25 mph. I can not imagine that situation had it been at any other location on the White Pass.

Question: is there any preliminary cause--I know that speculation is frowned upon on TOs but certainly there is a "best guess" cause. BTW, White Pass reopened the line for cruise trains in only 3 days.

On July 16, one week before the derailment, I shot this GoPro video while enroute to Carcross from Skagway. This is at the summit in the area that the derailment occurred.

Dang I was there a few years ago. What caused this slip a switch or something? Some of those spots up there could have been disastrous.

Would tightlock couplers have kept the coaches in line?
