Passenger Trains > "Stranger in a Strange Land..."Date: 07/31/14 15:58 "Stranger in a Strange Land..." Author: aussiehinz In a scene that New York Central's Commodore Vanderbilt would most likely disapprove of, PV "Babbling Brook," a 1949 Budd-built 5 Double Bedroom-Buffet-Observation Lounge, regularly assigned to the NYC's Boston-Chicago "New England States," brings up the markers on Amtrak Train #49, the tardy "Lake Shore Limited" as it turns its inbound equipment at Lumber Street in Chicago this afternoon. The car is crossing the ex Pennsylvania Railroad's massive South Branch Lift Bridge over the Chicago River just north of 21st Street, something this particular car would be very unlikely to do back in its streamliner days on the New York Central.
A few minutes earlier, "Babbling Brook," also accompanied on #49 by PV's "Hollywood Beach" and "Berlin," eased eastward past "MH" Tower during the equipment turning maneuver. "Babbling Brook" has long been been a personal favorite of mine, along with the other NYC "Brook"-series observation cars. Ah yes, a wonderful memory of the Great Steel Fleet. Look for us heading west on #3 today (Friday).
What a painfully slow ride across the NS Chicago Line. The congestion is unreal. Take care, John (rombout137) PV Babbling Brook Date: 08/01/14 06:56 Re: "Stranger in a Strange Land..." Author: BuddPullman Very Nice.

But the horrifying, ugly rust and obvious neglect of that bridge is breathtaking, something you'd expect in Slobbovia! Wonder how safe it really is? Date: 08/02/14 00:06 Re: "Stranger in a Strange Land..." Author: domefoamer That unusual car ahead of the obs is unfamiliar. Was it a custom remodel?
