CP F-units at Rondout today and in 2003
Author: Mastadon

Canadian Pacific's F-units don't get to Chicagoland with much regularity. As far as I know, they've only been in town twice. Today the F-units and the Business train departed Bensenville shortly before rush hour and I was able to leave work a tad early to get it at Rondout tower along with half of Chicagoland's foamer population.

Back in May of 2003 the F-units (and the Heritage GP38-2) were also rolling past the tower. Not much other than the paint on the tower has changed over the past eleven years.

You can check out the ol' Flickr page for more. Enjoy.

I couldn't get over there, glad you made it.
Better day and nice photo although, hadn't been to Rondout since the new paint.
Must have been on closeout special at HD.

Both great shots, but I think the red and white car behind the power in the current photo looks way out of place. This may have been covered before, but why were these F's renumbered? === === = === JLH

They are different F-units; the current wagons are former Ohio Central motors that replaced the 1400s that were acquired from the Nebkota back in the 1990's. And get used to that out of place power car. That is Canadian Pacific's "image" now. The last two cars were also in the dip red. It's only a matter of time before the current regime dips the F's and the heavyweights in the red-or replaces the F's with GEVOs.

Awesome train... caught it years ago going by the Old Oakland psgr yard when it visited San Francisco for some reason?!?
Nice to see Rondout hasn't changed much. Back in the 80's, I would visit here and also Duplainville (now long gone) to catch some of the C&M action... Great memories!

Yes. Metra owns, CP staffs (Milwaukee Road wisely retained dispatching control between here and Tower A-5 27 miles to the east when the suburban territory was sold).

That's a real dogs breakfast of a business train.

Oh, man - been there, done that, lol:

"Next time the train comes through, I'm gonna get it
on a nicer day and without that dang van!"

Tenacity, a friend of mine keeps saying!

Nice catch!

In regards to the red dipped power car and CP's new
look... how will we be able to tell CP apart from
CN?

Are they really going red as CN has? Or is red OK,
now that CN made the move to CP's old colors, lol -
green and olive.

The CP Royal Canadian train did not have that funky red power car two weeks ago when the train was in Vancouver, BC.

I didn't know the Nebkota F's were replaced. So where are the ex-Nebkota F's now? === === = === JLH

1400 is dead, the nice grills went on 4107
1401 is being used as a switcher for the passenger fleet in Calgary, rumoured to be tendered for a GP38-2 type internal upgrade.

I'm a 63 year old Illinois native and unfortunately I still live in Illinois. Not all that far from Rondout.

What amazes me most about the first picture is that is the CP crossing the CN in Illinois. Who'd a ever thunk it?

The Canadians must be taking over! :O They're an aggressive bunch. <G> One time when I was visiting my folks in Florida, my mom and I were standing in line at a department store and this guy cut in front of us. My mom said, "He must be a Canadian, they are a pushy bunch." And then he bellowed: "We are not pushy!" LOL Nothing against my Canadian friends, I just thought it was funny.
