What gage it is?
Author: Woodman

We just went to the Ringling museum in Saratoga, FL. Can anyone tell me the gage of the model railroad there. It seems larger than G gage, but I am not sure. Thanks for your help in advance.

I have nothing to add, but, 'gauge'.

To my recollection, if we are talking about the coaches used in the movie that was made in the 1950's there at the museum, then it is in 1 inch scale (1:12). This is a popular modeling scale for movies back then, and in some cases, even today. The end of Back to the Future 3 when the locomotive goes off the cliff, it was in 1" scale. It is a good scale in the live steam world.

Hope that helps.

I'm with you 100%, but the FRA officially spells it 'gage'.

But since these are models wouldn't scale be a better term?

The gage of track used by a 1 inch=1 foot scale model is typically 4 3/4 inches. A little larger than it would be if precisely 1/12 scale. I learned when I googled that there is a Howard Bros circus train model, named such as the creator was not allowed to use the name, l that is 1/16 scale, 3 1/2 inch gauge, 3/4 inch = 1 foot.

Just realized the typo. I meant Sarasota, FL. OF course most people knew where I was talking about.
