Metra Highliner Funeral Train
Author: Mastadon

This morning (Sunday, 8/31) Metra ran a funeral train with SW1500 9 and a handful of retired Highliner electrics. They had been stored on a siding in Deerfield along the C&M Subdivision for a year or so while disposition was worked out. Today, the siding at Deerfield was cleaned out and the train ran THROUGH Chicago Union Station (a rare event) and then wound up at Metra's Blue Island yard where scrapping will occur according to scuttlebutt. Anyway, the SW1500 ran light up to Deerfield and then returned with the doomed electrics in nice morning light.

I shot it running south on CP's C&M Subdivision in Northbrook from Mount Landfill (a former dump now turned into a North Shore golf course) as it passed beneath UP's Milwaukee Sub and alongside the Costco. The North Shore "thugs" had tagged most of the cars while they languished in Deerfield, but the graffiti was all painted out for their final run.

I remember going to the plant in St. Louis as these were being built in 1970?

44 years? Yeah, I think they got their nickle worth out of these units.

Have any of these cars been donated to any museums.

Boone Valley has a couple, and I think the museum in North Judson IN does as well. Unfortunately IRM is still without.

The March issue of R&R shows a pic of a January funeral train and said the destination was a south side scrapper. Does anyone know where they are being scrapped?
