An unusual new signal installation on Metra
Author: inCHI

These new signals are unusual because under the current plans, once activated, one of the tracks will only be in service temporarily, and may never be restored. So this new triple track bridge may only service a double track main. The context is Metra's UP North bridge replacement project, which is replacing bridges on a double track main line. To do so, they restored the ROW for the old third main, put new bridges on it, and will cut one of the current main tracks over to it. Once that is one, they will shut down one of the existing mains and replace the bridges on it then resume service on it. But because of a lack of funding, they currently are not planning to redo bridges on the other current main track, and therefore, they won't be triple-tracking the segment. So while there are three new signals here, it appears one will only operate briefly.

You can see the current tracks in the second photo, and the new (restored) track being built on the west side of the ROW. Only part of the signal installation is up in that photo.

Is the upper double light a gyralite on the cabcar?

The upper double light is the 2 headlight bulbs, the single light below it is the Gyralight.
