AAPRCO Special at Burns Harbor
Author: Mastadon

2014's AAPRCO private car special rolls east on Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line alongside the South Shore at Burns Harbor. The convention will be held in Portland, Maine and the hodge-podge of 26 pieces of Private Varnish was following a trio of freshly cleaned Amtrak P42s.

Interesting how some of the non-dome cars are taller than others; presumably this would not be noticeable on their "home roads" where all the cars would have been the same height.

I think what you are seeing and commenting on is the difference between heavyweight and the more modern lightweight cars. AA

Thanks for a logical explanation. I would guess that the heavyweights were among those where the clerestory roof was modified into what looks like an arch roof.

I have heard that the "closing up" of the clerestory roof on older heavyweights was due the the addition of air conditioning to these cars.
