PTC support becomes a political matter
Author: Lackawanna484

The Westchester County NY newspaper endorses Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney over Republican Nan Hayworth for Congress. One of the reasons provided is the Journal News notes his support of Positive Train Control.

PTC, the allegedly crappy safety record of MetroNorth, and other rail matters are serious issues in suburban NY where a significant number of people commute on MetroNorth.

Not "alleged crappy safety record", just "crappy safety record". Read the Operation Deep Dive report for a real eye-opener.

The same Journal News also has a link to the various safety reports, as well as the lament of a track manager. If you can't get time and track to fix problems, etc you're setting yourself up for more problems down the (rail)road. Temporary fixes become permanent fixes, etc.

PTC is needed, of course, but very costly, as the entire railroad industry has told us.

Probably, MetroNorth is on a tight budget. Since I was instructed to move to Calif. and pay taxes for high-speed rail; wondering if you could move to suburban New York and pay their taxes to help MN comply with these Government recommendations.

Joe

PS: As an aside; MetroNorth has a brand new car fleet to New Haven; only wish Amtrak could be that lucky.

The state of CT paid for that new fleet, as the old stuff was literally falling apart. Unlike NY, which has a funding source in highway tolls, real estate, sales, and income tax surcharges in the service area, CT has to go through a funding decision each year.

It's been a "political matter" since the beginning...
