Empire Builder (27) 17 hours late at Spokane
Author: jdb

There is some track work going on in The Gorge. Today's #28 and #27 were already supposed to be a bus and #27 was supposed to turn in Spokane.

Now then, does the Portland station stay open all night for the people that are waiting for passengers on #27? If so, does the evening shift at Portland just stay on overtime until the arrival of the bus? Or, does tomorrow's day shift come in early?

This #27 is just a small part of the problems that Portland had today. And they aren't over as I write this. PDX/SEA/PDX experienced a meltdown today. Everybody was late, late, late. The crew for #500 goes north to Seattle and comes back as #507. It was so late going north that it can't get back to Portland in hours of service. By mid-afternoon they were planning on an on-time BUS departure out of Portland to Eugene for #507. That doesn't help the Seattle passengers that are on the train and going south to Eugene. Salem station has to stay open on overtime for the train. (Seattle passengers and bags) And the train has to get to Eugene for tomorrow's #500.

boy what a cluster.....we were supposed to have dinner with our Seattle arriving son here in Portland at 6 pm. He didn't arrive in Portland until just before 10 PM....about 4 hours late from Seattle.

What caused all of the delays?

The worst delay was due to a stalled BNSF freight with a locked
axle on one of its engines.

But by that time the Builder was hours late already. If it had
been where it was supposed to be...but that doesn't happen these
days.
