It seems like alot of experienced railroaders have retired from that operation.....with rookies replacing them? What's up with all their accidents???

On the "Farewell to the FL9" excursion, many Metro-North managers whom I know came along.
They formed the nucleus of the leadership team that took Metro-North through its
period of rapid growth and built a smooth-running, efficient, safe railroad.

Every single one of them has now retired. One of the last told me that it was like
"Will the last one out turn off the lights?" Many of their replacements came from the
ranks of bureaucrats and administrators, not railroaders.

But on the other side of the dime, why would a good railroader give up her or his seniority, good money, etc to be a manager?

You lose the union representation, no hours of service, you can get the s### kicked out of you by a moron one level above you who has political etc connections.

I've worked in a number of places over the years, and the quality of management is a pretty good indicator of the kind of place it turns out to be.
