Interesting possibility:
The consist that was photographed on the 15th going to Elmira had TWO Amdinettes.
The consist we see pictured on this thread had #48190 trailing the 8 bags.
Not having seen any record of the other Amdinette with the 18 cars on Wed., I wonder if the car had been left in Elmira to accompany the next group of released CAF cars?

The other amdinette is clearly visible on the markers of the 18 car train. It can be seen here:

Why all of a sudden are those cars out in such large numbers ?
It is like a dog litter with mama on fertility meds.

Are these cars also going to Hialeah? I would assume the first trains to see the new baggage cars would be the Silver Star and Silver Meteor. If things go smoothly with these two, the new cars will probably be ferried up to New York on the Silvers and start being used on the LSL, Crescent, and Cardinal. The Western trains would then be equipped. It will be an interesting 2015 with all the new cars coming on line and figuring out where they will end up.

The first set of cars we saw out were testing. CAF did not stop building and they probably kept completing cars waiting on Amtrak's feedback on the 4(? 5?) that were being tested. So, CAF probably got a list of notes and tweaks and changes to do on the cars in production and completed. I would presume that either the baggage cars needed few or none, or Amtrak made those a priority. There are a lot ready to go and someone has now given the go ahead to accept them.

So are these cars now in Rensselaer?

Assumption is that Amtrak did not have the funds to pay for these cars until now, and is still stretched to make good on the contract. Using cash raised from extra Thanksgiving trains perhaps?

The cars are in dc this morning and the money assumption is totally incorrect. Until the initial testing was complete, cars could not be shipped. Testing is now finished, successfully, and the cars that were awaiting shipment have moved to next step which is commissioning for revenue service.

Is Amtrak still planning on scrapping all the old baggage cars, or will they let the cars or selected parts (e.g. wheel trucks) be bid on by private car owners?
