Caltrain South City Station Redesign
Author: shed47

The South San Francisco City Council has allocated $5.9 million to provide the local match to $49 million of San Mateo Co. Measure A funding to cover a complete redesign of Caltrain's South San Francisco station. The project couild be completed within four years at about the same time as electrification.

A single wide island platform would serve both tracks(the same as Belmont). A pedestrian tunnel would run from downtown(Airport Blvd.) under the tracks to Executive Drive with access to the platform at the midpoint. A new dropoff/pickup area for shuttle buses will be built on Executive Drive providing a shorter trip for those buses to the nearby biotech campuses.

South San Francisco is one of Caltrain's few remaing Rule 6.30 Hold Out stations where only one train is allowed in a station at a time and this redesign will eliminate that. The first two photos illustrate why this rule still applies at SSF. Unknown if the classic eight track Bayshore Cutoff era(1906-07) signal bridge just north of SSF(seen in third photo) will be affected by this project. If the number two main track is slewed to the west to accommodate the new island platform then some signals atop the bridge may have to be repositioned.
