NEC and other commuter service status today
Author: twropr

A quick check of the websites shows Metro-North beginning to operate a Sunday Schedule on the Harlem/Hudson Lines at 11 am and on the NH line at 1 pm today. NJ Transit began operating a weekend schedule over the NEC (believe this includes the Raritan Line) and has been operating a weekend schedule over the Atlantic City Line. SEPTA has been operating a Saturday schedule over all rail lines, except for the Cynwd, where service has been suspeneded. VRE says they are operating a normal weekday schedule, and it appears that MARC is (can someone in the territory verify this?)
Dixieland shows LD and a few regionals operating over NEC NY-WAS and NY/PHI-HAR. #63 originated at Albany-Rensselaer, and #284, #48 and #64 are showing operating across the water level route.

The news media is very sorry this didn't turn into the monster they predicted and so much wanted. Complete over reaction by transit and government officials. We have become a nation of wimps. I think my entire time in both high school and college we got maybe two or three snow days. And it snows lots in Michigan.

VRE and MARC are both operating normal schedules.

Federal agencies are open with two-hour delayed arrival for
employees in effect, and option for telework if employee is
eligible.

Snow emergency that was declared in such a panic in the
Philadelphia area is cancelled.

My Grandfather worked for the Boston Elevated, that is before MTA or MBTA...He worked for them in the 1900-1935 timeframe....I remember my mother and her sisters talking many years ago, how my grandfather would go to work when it was snowing to keep the system running.. They never shutdown!!!! and that is before all the snow removal equipment we have today....such is progress...

At least what is falling is not going to be melting quickly.

This photo is not of some meandering branch line. It is the Northeast Corridor
near Kingston, Rhode Island after a particularly bad spring storm, which dumped a lot
of water, along with snow melt.

There were no 150mph Acelas for days.

Maybe, but if they hadn't taken precautions and it turned out worse then predicted, then it could have become a tragedy with people dying. It was far better to err on the side of caution. Hindsight is a perfect science.

The NWS was apparently correct about their expectations in New England, though. But I agree with some of the other posters that the likes of the weather channel folks are happiest when they are talking about an impending disaster.

A comment in a message to me from a resident of Florida would seem
to say that the overblown "dire weather predictions when sprinkling
of rain/rain/weather squalls/thunderstorms/tropical storms/minor
hurricanes/hurricanes/super hurricanes may or may not be headed our
way (has) grown so much into a scare industry that it's become laughable."

It also seems to suggest that it grew up with the wintertime, and then
post-retirement migration of Northeasterners to Florida.

No, it grew with people who don't listen to warning and get themselves and rescuers into dire situations. And it grew with a society that refuses to be prepared to be self sufficient and take care of themselves. If the power goes out, or if the grocery store shelves are empty, they are helpless.

Not really - we have become a nation of lawyers looking to sue. If they didn't close down early, and if someone had been left in a station, car, bus, etc. and if they hadn't gotten out within 10 minutes, the suit would have been more than any money spent on shut downs.

Same with every other "wimp" or "nanny state" issue. Get rid of the lawyers, or more specifically, reform the torte system, and a lot of that goes away. From lighter rail vehicles to requiring damned near a carrier barrier at railroad crossings....all are driven by liability concerns.

This over hyping storms is a product of the Internet. When they do this web sites get slammed with lots of traffic and that means eyeballs looking at advertisements.... thus lots of $'s. In the days before the Internet television networks could not see an immediate revenue result from eyeballs watching the tube as ads were not based on individual daily viewership.

Now we have names like Polar Vortex, Atmospheric River, and Epic Snowmageddon. I am sure some of you can add to the list of names used in recent years.

< Now we have names like Polar Vortex >

Polar Vortex is not a new name, even though Rush Limbaugh accused Al Roker of it.
Last year, to refute this talk-show crank and alleged expert on everything, Al pulled out his Meteorology textbook from 1958 with "Polar Vortex" right there defined in the Appendix, which he displayed on TV, then told Rush to "stuff it"..

Polar Vortex is precisely what happened to areas of the country last year.

What I criticize these NY/NJ Metro area so-called Meteorologists for is when the storm was in the process of shifting east 75 miles, they did NOT decrease their snow total for NYC and NJ, but increased them. The 24 - 29" did in fact hit Suffolk County's North Fork, eastern Connecticut, and is off to Boston.

Where I am in Central NJ, I was "supposed" to get 9". It was foolishly upped to 14" as the eastern shift occurred, and got just 4". Nonetheless, the driving ban remained in effect until 730am, and my NJT line resumed on a Sunday schedule at 10am.

Bingo! That about sums it up.

Think the forecasters were thrown under the bus on Buffalo??? not to say they don't over do it anyway but.....

The policy makers, ie transit execs, business leaders, The Mayor of New York and Governor etc etc have access to more detailed information than we do with last minute updates.

They have the ability to look at the probability of different scenarios, get a detailed analysis hopefully stripped of the hype and make informed decisions based on input from their operating people.
If they made their decisions based on the CBS news, Yikes

Easy decision is to just say stay at home close down everything, disaster coming our way and if it doesn't blame the weather guys. The hard decisions would be to say how bad do we think it will be and what services should we run and not run.

I can't shake the idea that behind some of this is the climate change scare tactics. The storms are getting worse, more snow, more hurricanes, more rain, more flooding, pestilence etc. Maybe even worse than:

"This could be the biggest snowstorm in the history of this city," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday.

I think this overreaction is Sandy shock. We have had big storms before like Christmas 2010 we got 28" in north Jersey yet everything operated that day I made my way I to work in NYC and got home no issues. But Sandy caught these guys with their pants down by not listening so now they listen and over react. Use to be trains always ran and that wasn't so long ago. Better safe than so sorry works go for schools and non profits but if your in business to earn a living losing days hurts.

Let's get lawyers out of politics too...
