Will screw up number 14.
Good news: commute train, not oil.

Really? The last time there was a wreck on this line it changed everything forever for train crews.

Yes, good to have a passenger train scattered about the scene with PEOPLE on it than having a freight train have the collision. You may want to re-think your statement.

I think this accident injured more people than ALL of the previous oil train derailments in the US combined in the last 10 years. Jeez.

Less media frenzy. Possibly quicker clean up and restoration of service.

#11 is being annulled at Emeryville or Oakland and the passengers are boarding Capitol Corridor #527 for the trip to San Jose. The passengers are being bused south from San Jose.

Poor passengers. Nothing worse than riding a bus on 101. Or, as they say in LA, "the 101."

#11 is annulled at EMY. My train, 527, has p/u many of their passengers and we're taking them to OKJ for bussing and Valley train connections. We're not taking them to SJC, only to OKJ. My guess is that EMY has it's hands full trying to launch #6, so all the accommodations for 11's people will be done in OKJ where the staff can better focus on their situation.
SR

11 will be cleaned & serviced in Oakland, then become tonight's 14.

While the way he put it was not good he has a valid point. You are absolutely correct this has injured more people than the oil derailments but you and most of us are intelligent people who based judgments on facts. Unfortunately the general public as whipped up by media frenzy bases judgments on emotions. All they see is a fireball from a oil train and are convinced that one day very soon now they will be engulfed in a huge fireball from yet another oil train derailment. Just like they will look at this and be convinced that Metrolink is unsafe, yet they will happily get in their car and careen down the freeway at 85mph and not realize how many people die each day in car accidents.

Yeah but if no one dies then it won't be news for long, won't be controversial enough for the media. The fire/environmental impact of oil trains is much more exciting news to cover.

For those who think that a locomotive is less likely to be derailed than a control cab car, here's a couple of photos from 1967, when the combined Sunset/Golden State hit (as I recall) an empty hay trailer in Bassett (about 15 miles east of Los Angeles on the SP line to Colton). Photos were taken early in the morning--I knew nothing about the wreck because this was before all-news radio stations. I got my shots, and then left the area when instructed to do so by a Sheriff's deputy.

Oxnard CA Metrolink Update

It is 4 P.M. EST here and I just learned from a friend in So. Calif. that one person has passed away from the Metrolink incident this morning on the Santa Barbara Division. The driver of the truck may face some legal issues. http://ktlane.ws/17u4NRX was a link I used for a news briefing earlier. KTLA is channel 5 in L.A. and has a Ventura County news feed. Apparently PTC is imminent and we be on line during this year starting withe San Bernardino line for testing very soon and the rest to follow.

How would PTC prevent this or most at-grade crossing collisions?

From what I understand, it's already there.

We are all still awaiting with baited breath for the answer to this.

Not saying that your source is wrong, Phil - but the local news here is still saying no fatalities and only injuries (the worst was the engineer) at this hour (5 pm PST).

Since you took these pics, on the first one was the crane rising off its front wheels because of a lift in progress? If so, great catch!

On the mid-day press conference, one of the questions to the Metrolink representative by a reporter was regarding PTC. Kind of an irrelevant question.
My thoughts exactly, how would PTC have prevented this?

Time to spend the money and eliminate all grade crossings.

It does look like there was a newer cab car.

Pigs will fly before there will ever be enough $$$$ available in this country to grade separate all crossings!
