Alaska --- Where Is This?
Author: CA_Sou_MA_Agent

I saw this photo in a recent ad for cruise ship operations in Alaska.

Was some "photographic wizardry" used in manufacturing / composing this photo?

I've been to Seward and Whittier and I can't remember seeing anything that looks remotely similar to this.

Looks like it could be Whittier but a bit of a "photoshop" effort

That would be my guess also, that it's somewhere along the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, before the tracks take off through the tunnel to Whittier. But I've not been there since 1991, and things could have changed, or my memory could be faulty.

With Photoshop, you can't believe anything that you see in a photograph any more.

I'm guessing Photoshop. That's a little shallow along the roadway. Id its Turnagin Arm. But the road looks wrong.
If Whitier maybe......

Pretty sure that is the cruise ship terminal in Whittier, AK on Prince William Sound. Image is kind of small so I can't make out a lot of the details. The train is coming out of Whittier heading for the tunnel, running parallel to West Camp Road. This is either cropped cleverly or Photoshopped to not show the small slips in the marina adjacent to the cruise ship dock. This was undoubtedly taken on the rare 3 or 4 sunny days Whittier gets in a year. It's always one extreme or the other there.

It is coming into Whittier as seen from the attached photo from the perspective of the train.

The photo was taken when I was General Foreman of Anchorage Shops 2007-2009 time frame.

Yeah, I think that nails it.

From my one and only visit in 1994 I don't seem to remember such a steep hill that paralleled the tracks into town.

And the weather WAS lousy on my visit!

And another similar shot taken August 22, 2009 of the northbound Glacier Discovery leaving Whittier and the Diamond Princess.

OK here's another shot of a train and a ship in Whittier. This shot shows the NRHS special arriving in Whittier in September 2013. With much more typical weather.

Incidentally the cruise ships in the photos in cruise line brochures often strike me as being somewhat oversized; To me it looks like they have superimposed a copy of a ship on an a scenic backdrop but let's make sure the ship stands out.
