The Blades of the Chief: Part 1
Author: 1976

I'll start by saying this will be a multi-part event due to the amount of material I came home with.

The most important part, however would be my many many thanks to highgreengraphics. He was kind enough to exchange several messages that aided in the chases. I would also like to thank all the others that posted replies and gave info that assisted greatly.

I would like to share with all of you the first clip of probably 4 that will show up eventually, along with some photographs. Enjoy!

4 and 5: A couple disposable shots at West Colmor that I feel like I ruined.
6: While trying to beat the train to the horseshoe curve West of Blanchard, I ran across a closed ranch gate, so I jumped out where I was and ended up with this grab shot.

9 and 10: 712 intermediates West of Colmor.
11: 717 intermediates East of Levy. I ended up with this one because we passed him at the 25mph at 714.8 but couldn't stay ahead for Levy due to the terrible road conditions during the snow storm. Another grab shot.

This should be a VOD, A Wig-Wag and semaphores!

Deserves the so overused term "awesome".  It is this sort of material that keeps me on TO despite other issues with the site.

I agree with Joey and would add that photos 2, 7 and 8 are all candidates for image of the day.

Thanks for going to the effort in recording the train on video and getting the still images and sharing them with us.

Glad you were able to use the information, I was wondering if you were going to post. I see you braved the Wootton Ranch sign, I'll bet that was fun getting down that hillside in the snow, it is no fun even when it is dry! And as you saw, it is a very tight photo, but you did good there! For some reason, Colmor can be tricky to get just right, either end is strangely problematic, I usually blow my first day there, just hard to position the semaphores and the train for some reason. Nice coverage, though, I see you got the snow. I was going to go down at the same time for a second shot with the snow, but the lingering effects from my prostate surgery made it foolhardy for me to go right at that time. Did any of your detailed itinerary work? Basically, you just keep several plans in your head and drive like a crazed, maniacal striped bearcat! You got a very nice collection! === === = === JLH

I'd say I stuck to the plan about 75%. By the end of the week, there was a lot of last minute or at least day-of decisions made.
