NJ: a few hours along the NEC
Author: Lackawanna484

I had the opportunity to spend about two hours alongside the NEC, just south of New Brunswick NJ today. Cold, windy, deeply overcast day, so I decided to watch trains.  There were a lot of trains.  No old baggage cars, and just two MU sets.  The MU trains are increasingly rush hour only on the NEC.

600s are new Sprinters
900s are old AEM-7 units
2000s are Acela power units
4500s are NJ Transit dual mode ALP45 motors
4600s are NJ Transit electric ALP46 motors

606 (a new Sprinter) with a westbound regional train at 840am
4509 (an NJ Transit dual mode) originating train 3720 from Jersey Avenue
4646 (an NJ Transit ALP-46) inbound with 3711, will turn as 3722
4648 with a Trenton semi-express
2039/2035 (Acela set) inbound, a few minutes late, blocking 3722
4510 eastbound with a local train from Trenton 925am
4646 asks for permission toward NY with train 3722 (denied)
939 (AEM-7) eastbound with 6 cars on a regional 929am
2001/2003 westbound at 930am
4646 finally departs with 3722 932am
[DS is probing an outbound train at Newark Airport about why it had a six minute dwell at the Airport]
NJT MU set eastbound at 935am (one of only two MU sets seen today)
4609 west with a Trenton local
Amtrak 523 with a work train asks for permission to leave ADAMS yard, just south of me
4641 with a single level train at 936am
Work train reports clear
934 eastbound with a long distance train and a sparkling new baggage car  945am
4622 with a single deck train west 946am
929 with a westbound Keystone train 1003am (this 17 minute gap was unusual)
629 eb on a regional 1009am
4652 with a westbound multilevel train 1013am
2030/2031 Acela eb at 1014am
4660 eb with multilevel coaches 1015am
927 eb with a Keystone train 1026am
2038 +1 Acela wb at 1032am
4610 wb with a single level train 1039am
921 eb with a regional train 1041am
946 wb with a regional train 1046am
4634 wb with a multilevel train 1046
(Left to run some errands)
? Sprinter with train 91 and a new baggage car around 1130

If I had been north of New Brunswick at Rahway, Linden, Elizabeth, etc I would have seen all of these trains plus the trains to and from the North Jersey Coast Line. Add another four+ trains per hour for that.

Thanks. It would have been neat to have that in time lapse.

There were a few points where three trains were in sight at the same time.
