This is news?  Heck, it's probably a weekly occurance on the COAST STARLIGHT.   A train attendant told me he once caught a couple going full bore on the lower baggage rack of an ex-Santa Fe Hi Level car in the wee hours of the morning.  The girl was perched on the baggage rack and the guy was standing.  The attendant tapped the guy on the shoulder and said, "Sir, the two of you can't be doing this here."  The male passenger responded with, "Lecture me after I'm finished."

This is just an opportunity for the Conductor to sell them an upgrade to a Roomette!

In 1993, about 3:00 am, a rather strict conductor was passing by his train, the southbound Texas Eagle, at Poplar Bluff, Missouri.  The train had arrived early, and had to wait on time.  As he passed by the Superliner Sightseer Lounge car with the large windows, he notice a couple engaged in sex in one of the double seats.  The conductor was furious and called for the special agent to assist him in dealing with the situation.  When it was all over the railroad operator came out of his office and said.  "You know, I am going to have to start riding Amtrak!"

Certainly the Zephyr. Winter Park -- even the base -- is around 9,000 feet.

Truckee to Roseville would qualify, too

There is also the "90 MPH Club" on the Surfliners and the Southwest Chief.

Are you saying that when conductors have one single traveler sit next to another single traveler to make room for a couple, they won't be able to keep their hands off each other?  That's a rather dim view of young single men and women.

Why is this even news? Seriously. I don't know what it is with lawmakers and their overzealousness with the sex police. These 2 individuals have lives, they have value, and they are people. NOW, enter in the sex hounds and this is the result. While I don't condone such behavior, it's repugnant to say the least to give the episode such media attention. By the time the DA gets a hold of this, everybody will want their own little slice of the event for their own profit. From the DA, the courts, the judge, the attorneys, the police that arrested them, the county jail they were taken to, the court reporters, secretaries taking all their information down to get these 2 unfortunate souls "into" the system. Once that's all done with they will probably have to register for life as an offender, which will open up an entire new world of restrictions for them. This will haunt them for the remainder of their lives. And all this is forgetting the fact that their personal lives are now destroyed on a scale they can't possibly have imagined at the time, then after the arrest comes the shame by their families and friends which will most likely all shun them as well. Why? All because a conductor couldn't keep his nose out of their affairs. I liked the era of time in our history from the story above "the male passenger responded with, lecture me when I'm finished" followed by a conductor which apparently did just that, or didn't do anything at all. Think I'm the only one? Check out the laws regarding merely taking pictures, all invoked over fear, then head over to the nostalgia board where you can reminisce of a day when such a police state was non existant.

Everybody loves to inject themselves into behavior they deem innappropriate. Makes them look better to everyone else. "See, I don't do that, but they did! Shame on them!" These are the very citizens who enjoy promoting their own moral agenda upon the population as "protecting" people by enacting such laws. And this is a prime example. If the car had people in it, let the people shame them. If there were enough complaints, then a judge may scold them for their behavior. But for it to be made a public shaming spanning the country on the internet with names given, and the sex police called invokes a complete disregard for them as human beings. At this point, their moment of being human is all up for grab by anyone and everyone standing by ready to get their greedy hands all over it. That is beyond sickening to me.

Years ago, working #36 (Desert Wind) I stumbled into a couple in the lower level of the 10 Car (coach/dorm).
In those days the dorms were old ATSF Hi-Levels. The luggage racks on those cars had a hatch, hinged at the top, that opened in and latched so that luggage could be loaded from outside the car directly onto the rack- much like the SP Daylight cars had.
This couple had rolled out their sleeping bag on the luggage shelf, had the hatch open, and were curled up enjoying a full moon lit ride up Meadow Valley Wash. They looked up, shocked, when they saw me- surely busted!
I laughed and put my hands up in surrender, "The only thing you'll get from me, folks, is envy! Looks like about the best train ride ever!"
They apologized, and thanked me. I brushed my teeth and was off to bed.
They were gone when I got up for Salt Lake City.
