Amtrak derailment in Philly
Author: FL9

There was an Amtrak train that derailed in the Frankford section of Philadelphia tonight and some cars rolled over. I saw a little bit ago some pictures on Twitter from someone who was on the train, and then this story popped up:

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Amtrak-Derailment-Philadelphia--303536331.html

Not a whole lot of details yet.

Twitter feeds show cars overturned at Frankford Jct. on the curve. Looks like it was Regional 188.

That looks pretty rough from the chopper live shots.  Is that a mangled coach away from the main string of cars?

According to this Amtrak Status Maps page this looks to be
train 188 a northbound Noreast Regional that had just departed Philadelpia PA.
Train 188 shows as a GREY color as a Service Disruption on this map.

Prayers to all involved in this very scary derailment

Definately something mangled off to the side.  Looks to be a coach ripped to shreds.  Prayers for all involved.

Looks like it happened on the speed - restricted curve (red dot).

Fox News reporting 8 "trains" off the track. Why do they call individual coaches "trains?"  And CNN is worse showing a car that not only wasn't in the crash, but wouldn't operate on the NEC anyway!  Sounds like  possibly excessive speed on a curve as no collision reported.

50 mph speed restriction for the curve on all tracks ...

if there's no one dead on that train i'll be totally surprised ... one car end looks like it sheared off ... nearest switch is about 1500ft to the west ... all switches were all installed in last 5 years or so ...

In the aerial footage on CNN, it looks like the mangled wreckage is about 1/3 of the car below and to the right in the frame.  You can see that the coach is too short - missing about 1/3 of its length. It looks like a vestibule in the mangle wreckage that sheared off when it hit water it's up against.  This looks pretty bad.  I don't see the locomotive(s) anywhere in the footage.  Prayers out for the passengers involved,

Dave

Appears to be near Frankford Jct. just east of Shore Interlocking on a curve rated for 50 m.p.h.

Chopper zoomed in on the locomotive at one point.  Looked like one of the ACS-64's and it looked to be in good shape.

One car looks totally bent in half - not good.

Perhaps the freight derailed and the passenger train hit it? A lot of possibilites until we know...
