Route of Ethan Allen Express?
Author: 2839Canadian

Leaving Albany, does the Ethan Allen Express still run on the D&H?  Is this line still the D&H, or is now owned by a different RR?

Are the frequencies still 161.100,  160.590  and 160.530?

Thanks in advance

Amtrak from Rensselaer to Schenectady.  D&H (CP Rail) from Schenectady to just south of Whitehall.  Vermont Railway from Whitehall to Rutland.

160.725 from Rensselaer to Schenectady
161.100 from Schenectady to Whitehall
161.175 from Whitehall to Castleton, VT
160.290/161.010 from Castleton, to Rutland

A bit of trivia: the railroad from Whitehall to Center Rutland (actually R&W Junction) is officially
the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad, a subsidiary of Vermont Rail System.

It is a former Delaware & Hudson branch that was purchased from D&H by Vermont Rail System in 1983.
Vermont Rail System already owned a small switching line, the Clarendon and Pittsford, whose main
business was originating granite blocks used in construction and for tombstones, from a quarry
near Florence, VT.  It once had a main line parallel to the former Rutland.

The former D&H branch was assigned to Clarendon and Pittsford and became its "new" main line;
the switching line, the Florence Branch. They are not physically connected with each other, but by
Vermont Railway.

The D&H branch was badly deteriorated at the time, and Vermont Rail System assigned it to
the C&P subsidiary. Over the next few years the line was rehabilitated, becoming the major
interchange to the VTR from the west.  Further upgrading was done to upgrade the line
for passenger trains at maximum speeds of 59mph from Center Rutland to Castleton; 55mph
from Castleton to Fair Haven; and 50mph from Fair Haven to Whitehall.

Not quite, in terms of the traffic: the quarries at Proctor and Florence produced marble, not granite. Marble was so plentiful that the older sidewalks in Proctor are made of marble slabs, not concrete. The marble business in Proctor has dried up, but Omya still operates the quarry in Florence, from which it ships crushed marble -- evidently both as a slurry and as a powder -- outbound. It's one of the busiest customers on VRS.

The Amtrak line used by the Ethan Allen and Adirondack trains connects to the D&H line at CPF-485 just north of the Schenectady Amtrak station. Track from CPF-485 northward to Montreal will remain under CP ownership after NS takes title to the D&H lines south of Schenectady.

If you REALLY want to get technical, the line is the Rutland & Whitehall Railroad, with a purpetual lease now assigned to the Vermont Railway.  They have been slowly buyin gup the stock, but as of now the R&W still exists!

We will be riding all the lines at the NRHS 2015 Rutland Convention. Tickets are still available if you want to join us.

Hopefully we will see the Ethan Allen heading up to Burlington and perhaps even moving over south of Rutland at Bennington.
