Passenger Trains > Viewliner II Sleepers

Does anybody have any info as to when the Viewliner II sleepers will start arrving?

P42 locomotives 41&48 are being readied @Albany for a trip to Elmira NY on Monday to go and get more baggage cars.

Sleepers follow diners. Somewhere in there are the 10 bag-dorms.

Not sure if many of us on here will live long enough to see all of these cars in revenue service.

Isn't that the truth!  Boardman is worried about replacements for Acela trains.  Remember, they make money.  These LD trains run where?

Of course, that's "make money."  In quotes.  As though it's a lie.  Which it is.

Why were bags done first? I really don't see the need. Sure the current bags are old but they aren't carrying people. Just stuff. VIA doesn't seem to have any problems running their bags of the same age.

It is a complete, misleading, and damaging lie that will hurt Amtrak in the long run.  Trains had a good piece this issue suggesting we stop categorizing trains like corridor, state supported, LD and just go with passenger trains.  It closed by stating that it is time for Amtrak to make its case to Congress.  

The company has no spine, in any way.  With employees, with railroads, with Congress.  It is time to get one.

The Dorms are for the Crescent, Silver Star, Silve Metour and the Lake Shore Limited.

Not likely to happen. Do the math.

Some Republican legislators are opposed to Amtrak, either on philosophical grounds, or on its demonstrably poor management grounds.  Many Democratic legislators are closely aligned with the unions and will oppose any changes that undermine hard won bargained provisions. 

Now, what kind of a coalition of the willing can you form from the remainder?

No they aren't - because there are only to be 10.

And if Amtrak had stuck with the ORIGINAL order allocation of 25 (and not 10) Viewliner Bagg/Dorms, all single level LD trains in East would have had one. But now with the re-allocation of 10, this will likely just outfit the Silver Star and Meteor.....

Amtrak should have gotten the Sleepers and Diners out first. Amtrak wants to beef up revenue with the baggage cars - and a modified baggage policy is coming out Oct 1 - but with the continuation of de-staffing stations, this makes monetizing the baggage hard.  Plus it is still low dollars compared to a sleeper. 

It has been suggested that the bags were done first because they were the simplest to build.
Aren't the other cars way behind in delivery?  Wonder why??

The order is 6 plus years behind in delivery. That Amtrak for you. always behind.

Baggage cars is where they learned how to (not)   build them.

Hopefully by the time others come out, they will be a good product.

Course some one may have said delay until the next years election !

By all means do the cheapest model first!
