Amtrak "San Diegans" today
Author: iliketrains

Yeah - Amtrak calls them "Surfliners....."

It appears the rescue locomotive stationed at San Diego went out to bring in a broken train to San Diego today.  They had several "pilots" out "back" facing backwards and came in slow.  I'm guessing it might have involved slow travel for many miles.  Immediately behind this train was another Amtrak train.  This same train left with passengers about 15 minutes after arrival.

No the wye is no more, That was Pacific Surfliner 777.   I rode down to Solana Beach and caught the late running 777 at Solana Beach for my trip to Fullerton for our train travel fgroup meeting.

By the way the service is the Pacific Surfliner and the San Diegan name died when we received the Surfliner cars.

This is the first time I've ever seen F59PHI's coupled nose to nose.

I beleive "cowl" units running backwards are restricted to 45 mph?

And how exactly does that pertain to the units in the posted picture coupled nose to nose?

Also no ditch lights so it's no more than 20mph over crossings.

I wonder how far out they had to go to rescue the disabled train. Since it departed back to LA shortly after it arrived, it may have been a problem with the controls in the F59.

Perhaps Mudrock was saying that a unit running backwards that was not the leading unit could run at track speed?

Was your reply making a note of my incorrect spelling of speed or something else, it make no sense to me.
