Capitol Limited Baggage Car
Author: Cumberland

In the past several days, I have noticed on the Sand Patch Webcam, that at least for P030 (Eastbound - Capitol Limited), its baggage car is different than the usual one, something I have never seen before - one that looks like something you would see on a bullet train.

Is there any story behind this?

Yes, that's the one. I don't really see how they got this name for this new version.

The bodyshell is that of the Viewliner single level sleepers used on the east coast, which have two levels of windows.

Matthew, most of the "heritage" fleet of baggage cars are 60 or even 70 years old. The cars are simply wearing out and new ones are desperately needed.

Here is a clearer picture for you of a new Viewliner Baggage Car.

Flame away,BUT when I read something like this and the one yesterday about an
Amtrak F40 on train 30.I wonder how any one can be on TO and not know what is
happining.Unless you are new to TO or railfanning I see no excuse.
Those baggage cars were delivered in Dec.2014 and on the road this year.
The F40 and consist had been around since Amtrak's 40th birthday, four years ago.
Maybe I am harsh, but wake up people.

if the OP is not a new member, it makes me wonder if he reads these threads with his eyes closed wondering what a viewliner bag is when there's got to be over 100 threads with more than 1/2 with photos ... like asking what is it when he sees a heritage unit ... com'on now ...

HA !!! i musta been typing this as unclejoe posted ... i see we share the same sentiment on this subject ...

Wow, you guys are harsh.

Matthew asked a question and you guys basically tell him he should have been paying attention and already know the answer because a bunch of other people have been talking about it for years. That's a great way to make people feel welcome.

I agree, nicely said.

Both of those comments, by Uncle Joe and Out-Of-Service,  may be in violation of #5 in the Guidelines.

Yes, if we are to grow, we need to encourage new members. Otherwise......

BandOb sent me a PM basically stating what's been said about my post being ungracious and unwelcoming and i DO see his point and the rest of the comments that agree with his and Brian's ...

so with all due respect my apologies to the OP ...

Yes, indeed. The number of people who pay attention to Amtrak at all, let alone Amtrak's baggage cars, is miniscule. (There are plenty of self-described "railfans" who eschew the Platinum Mist altogether.)

The Original Poster asked a pretty straightforward question. The kind and welcoming thing to do would be to direct the OP to several of many threads about these cars, and not jump all over the guy.

Wow!!!
You guys are brutal. The guy asked a simple, honest railfan question and you take his head off.
The header says this is The Eastern Railroad board, but it looks more like ATCSmon today. :-))

Here's #30(1) when we stopped at Cumberland, MD on Sunday 8/2.
Not only the new baggage car but what I guess was a deadheading coach and three locomotives.

And to think that all I had to ask questions was a 25 cent a month  Railroads man magazine.  But I made it through the railroad university OK,  No copy machine, no computer, no cell phone, no gps, Party line phone!  Kodak 10 color film was best on the market,  but I do belive it was a lot more fun.

i guess everything happens for a reason and through my insensitive comments i got a chance to communicate with Mr Cumberland (which wouldn't had happened if i didn't comment) and i now have a new understanding of him and things he's gone through in his lifetime ...

it surely brought things into perspective about people and the things one doesn't know about them ... i did apologize privately to M and we had a good conversation ... i wish him good luck in his future endeavors and the strength to deal with his daily struggles ...

as people as bad as our lives can be sometimes we all fall into that self pity state but if you let yourself look into the lives of other people and as bad your life might be there's always someone who's life is a lot more difficult than your own ...

good luck M ...
