Metra-UP Northwest Line stopped for pedestrian fatalilty
Author: illini73

All trains on the Metra-Union Pacific Northwest Line out of Chicago were stopped for two hours earlier this evening due to a pedestrian fatality near the Mt. Prospect, IL station shortly after 6:30 p.m.  Hearsay evidence suggests the pedestrian was struck by the 6:01 p.m. express train #651 which runs non-stop to Arlington Heights (the next station beyond Mt. Prospect), and is due there at 6:34 p.m.  While driving home tonight, I observed following trains 653 and 655 held at the Park Ridge, IL station; they were released about 8:45 p.m.  657 was holding behind them.  Details are sketchy but apparently the accident occurred at the Route 83 (Main St.) crossing just west of the passenger station, as Route 83 was closed for police activity between Northwest Highway and Prospect Ave., which parallel the tracks on either side.  The north end of the outbound station platform is also closed.  If 651 was a few minutes late he would have been there at the same time as local 649, due Mt. Prospect at 6:35.  Tragic confusion, or . . .?

Update:  Subsequent reports confirm train involved was #651 running on-time on Track 2 (center track).  The accident occurred at the Emerson St. crossing which bisects the station platforms, one block south of Route 83/Main St.  The pedestrian (a 54-year old woman who lives in town) was walking south and ignored the grade crossing warnings, which were activated.  Police have tentatively concluded she was trying to "beat the train".  The crew of #651 was relieved, adding to the delay.

Cause was someone being a trespasser, most likely inattentive of the warning devices, etc etc.

The train didn't jump off the tracks and hit a "pedestrian" walking down a sidewalk in front of a Starbucks, BUDDY.

Referring to these events/incidents as "ACCIDENTS" implies there was absolutely no way to prevent it. Your example of an "accidental pregancy" is false as well, as there's many ways to prevent that too. An "uninintended" pregnancy? Sure thing.

Uisng the word "accident" does not imply that the accident could gave been prevented. Just about every safety plan I've worked with uses the word "accidents" and focuses on how to "reduce and eliminate accidents".

Arguing semantics does not change the fact that one person's life ended and the lives of many others have been changed irrevocably.

Unless it's a suicide, it was an accident. I'm sorry that you're not comfortable with common world definitions.

NSClevelandSteamer,

You're right, I'm not a part of the lowest common denominator.
