Amtrak California "Cabbage Car" Assignments?
Author: DJ-12

Hi All,

My left coast brother, who I'd describe as a very casual railfan, has begun to take an interest in passenger operations out his way (he lives in the Bay Area). He periodically has to fly out of Oakland and usally stays in Emeryville, and has been doing some train watching at the Amtrak station there. He's particulalry interested in the Amtrak former F40PH "Cabbage Car" conversions. He doesn't have an account here, so I'm asking on his behalf: Are there any regular assignments for this equipment that he should be looking for, or is it fairly randomized?

They shouldn't be too difficult to find/see-  they're only used on the San Joaquin Comet Car set(s): 712 & 717.

(someone please step in and correct me if I''ve got that pairing wrong)

Thanks, I'll tell him to look for those.

712 / 717 is correct.

They have more than enough equipment (cabbages, comets, horizon cafes, engines) for another comet set to be out in rotation but for some reason they haven't expanded beyond the one round trip.

Right- there are 2 complete sets plus an extra F-40 cab, an extra Horizon cafe, and a few extra Comet coaches.
But the new Valley JPB group doesn't like them- so they sit.

(Yeah yeah I know- they're not REALLY Comets. Whatever.... )

I guess they don't like them because they don't look as "modern" as the high level cars.  But they really did a nice job refurbing them and they are comfortable to ride in.

A Trainorders subscription would make an excellent birthday or Christmas present!
