Apparently the southbound Vermonter has indeed derailed this morning near Northfield, VT, after hitting a rock slide.

I've read online that two cars are "down an embankment" but no reports on how steep the embankment is - other reports are saying that "no more ambulances are needed" on site.

Using words like "mass casualty" and "walking wounded" is a bit harsh, or so it seems for what actually happened.

Links above are to on-scene photos from various passengers that are so far on Twitter.  Take a look for yourself.  Nothing horribly graphic to look at.

No longer operates with a cab car since the reroute. P42 on the point.

I dunno, Jim.  Looks like a wild ride in the coach that is depicted in the second shot.  Thoughts and prayers are with all involved.  Let's hope the injuries are minor.

Only if the rocks have RFID chips.

Or if there were a slide fence.

I recall hearing something about this line getting signals, but I don't know if it has them yet. Historically it has been dark (unsignalled) territory with a 59-mph speed limit for passenger trains.

Jim Lipnitz setting out a mass casualty scenario means there are seven or more people injured at a scene. It just bumps up the resources we throw at it more than a normal wreck or accident. Walking wounded at a scene like this is the best you could ever get short of no injuries. Walking wounded means the people are injured but walking from the scene versus carried in stretchers or otherwise. Also nothing good ever travels by air is what our motto is, The most serious unstable patients are transported this way. Just trying to give you an education in terms as every job has different terms including railroads and video producers.Glad to see it wasnt as bad as it could have been.

Mass casualty definition varies based on where you are, and the capacities of the local emergency response. Could be as small as 2, if there is only one ambulance in the district.

The words used are everyday American Fire and EMS service technical terms.  In the Fire Service there is nothing harsh about them.  Just the language of the business.

To expand on what was said regarding the fire and emergency services definitions:

Mass Casualty = Accident where the number of patients exceed the capabilities of the initial resources, this commonly is a motor vehicle accident with more than a couple critical injuries or more the 5 to 7 moderate or minor injuries.  In many areas this will trigger an available bed count in emergency departments in the closest hospital so victims can be transported to where they can get treated the fastest.

Walking wounded = Those patients with mostly minor injuries that can walk on their own to a triage area, in this case most of the folks in those coaches would qualify.
