Not exactly. The freight railroads have already said they would embargo Amtrak. Clearly Amtrak states their trains on their routes would continue to operate.

Amtrak is also saying they will not operate on the Metro-North owned section of the NEC.

This is just Nuts

Amtrak Threatens to Suspend Rail Service

according to this they will keep service on tehir tracks and suspend the rest of the country  on the host railroads not up to speed with PTc.

No surprise. That's what the law says.

This just shows how pathetic Congress has become. They specialize in doing just two things:

1. Nothing
2. Kicking Cans

Last week, I watched with nausea as Congressmen congratulated one another for not shutting down the government. And then more back patting that they passed a spending bill that expires in 67 days. I'm sure they will mobilize on the PTC extension, but why would they part with tradition and not do it at the 11th hour? Funny too, because I expressly recall Mitch McConnell crowing that the Majority would be taking Congress "in a new direction." They have gone nowhere. Fast.

It would probably be easier for the railroads, collectively, just to ignore the law until it gets adjusted.  But I guess credit should be due to them for trying to get an extension, even with alarmist tactics.

A forced shutdown of railroads due to failure to comply isn't a likely realistic scenario, I don't think.

While this may sound ominous, it may be good news inasmuch as
some retards in Congress who passed the PTC mandate in
lockstep may not care about freight railroads, but know
that their constituency does care about passenger service
since it affects them more directly. This may increase
the likelihood of an extension to the deadline.

WARNING: the following is an overtly political message:

Throw Barbara Boxer under the bus: extend the PTC mandate
(Won't hurt her anyway, she's a lame duck Senator)!

Sorry, bus...

This country has way too much of that already. Do you support selective violation of laws you don't agree with?

They won't let labor shut down even one railroad. It remains to be seen if they feel their own cause to be different.

Based on recent info in Trains as well as online, the railroads don't have to shutdown, just can't carry the designated hazardous cargo - or passenger trains.
So, the railroads are asking which law to obey??
Must accept any cargo to be shipped or without PTC can't transport hazardous cargo or passengers.
