Date: 11/29/15 10:02 Re: providing "Hotel power." Author: Alco251 Smart engineer.
"Hotel electric power" is the correct engineering definition of "HEP." It's a term that refers to on-board power generated for uses other than propulsion. In the early days of Superliners and Amfleet, rail car builders borrowed the term from the ship building industry, where "hotel power" is commonly used in describing the non-propulsion generating and control functions on modern diesel-electric cruise ships. Railroaders and railfans long ago adapted "Head End Power" as the definition of "HEP" but the more correct term "hotel electric power" is used in a broader range of transport context.
