Lost an hour after Lynchburg due to locomotive problems. Train stopped three times before rectifying the problem. Currently almost two hours late, restricted to 65mph.

For your information #20 is not the train that's in trouble, when #147 arrived into Lynchburg Va yesterday the engineer told the mechanical contractor he was getting various faults and inspection revealed the EGU on locomotive P15 went up and the only recourse was to steal a locomotive off #20 so, when #20 arrived 2 mins late into Lynchburg this morning P156 was cut off and added ahead of P15 which left P32 514 the only power on #20. An incorrect decision was made as to what locomotive should have been added to #20 because #20 has more cars then #156. The big issue between Manassas and Alexandria Va is Fairfax hill which starts at Clifton Va and is all uphill to Fairfax Station Va and we also know it's raining, there's a rail grease oiler just north of Clifton interlocking and the leaves are blowing which makes for less then opimum conditions. If the locomotive(s) is/are full of sand and the sanders are working there shouldn't be an issue however, if the sanders are not working then we have issues so, next time you talk about STATE OF GOOD REPAIR please get your facts straight and by the way #20 lost 70 minutes at Lynchburg Va making this move.

But, but, but, he's a "real" locomotive engineer so he can't be wrong!

All is well as long as everyone follows the rule that "STATE OF GOOD REPAIR" always appears in caps.

Houston, we have a locomotive MX problem, over.

It seems maintenance problems are a core issue and certain focused comments (in my view) are not necessarily a snark-attack here.  To be sure, the frequent, smashed locomotive bodies at grade crossing incursions and resulting equipment delays are plentiful, and pose a threat to crews and passengers.  However, being an ex-airline guy, I believe that schedule reliability (dispatch reliability of locomotives and well-rested crews) is one of the biggest barriers to success that the beloved NRPC has, in my alleged opinion.

As an ardent Amtrak supporter, I'd like to know what can be done to resolve such issues and create sustainability.  I confess to being on several trains where the loco crapped in the middle of the night out in the middle of nowhere and the pax were concerned.  I rather like it that experienced railroaders such as you fine folks - are bringing issues out in the open - not to the disrespect of other posters, mind you.  A healthy and realistic discussion could shine some light on what is happening (or not happening) at the national and regional level.

Thanks for listening and for sharing.
