All you might want to know about Metra

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metra

Seems like it is an agency of the State of Illinois through RTA roots.  Link includes loco and car rosters.

Typical Wikipedia article. Not all "facts" are presented accurately.

For example: By the 1970s the BN, C&NW and Milwaukee Road were NOT operating with 1920s-era equipment. In fact, those roads had the most modern suburban fleets of all the Chicago roads, the oldest cars being the original order of CB&Q bilevels delivered in 1950. The Illinois Central electric service was still running its 1920s-era MU cars at the beginning of the decade but their fate had already been sealed with the purchase of the new "Highliner" cars from St. Louis Car Co. By 1971 deliveries were underway and the old cars were gone by mid-decade.

For 1920s-era equipment you needed to head for Joliet: Both the Rock Island and the GM&O "plug" fielded such consists daily.

There are also some errors in the equipment rosters, mostly the heritage of some of the bilevel fleet inherited from the railroads. For a more accurate roster, you might want to consult: http://www.chicagorailfan.com/rosmetra.html

Or you could go straight to the Metra website: http://metrarail.com/metra/en/home/about_metra/leadership/metra_history.html
