Passenger Trains > "Slot Train Racing" - Amtrak & NJT at Linden, NJDate: 02/09/16 17:29 "Slot Train Racing" - Amtrak & NJT at Linden, NJ Author: Mgoldman Reminds me of a slot car track - only white, with rail, lol.
An Amtrak train led an ACS-64 #640 runs on the express track ducking the surviving PRR signals while passing a local NJT train making an approach to Linden station. For those wondering, I beleive the overhead bridge in the background is the former Staten Island Railway freight line to Cranford, NJ which is no longer in service. However, looking at Google Maps, it seems there are some frieight cars in a nearby yard. Tracing the line, it appears the tracks are still there - and follow 'em long enough, they run into CSX's line near Bound Brook. Seems a viable line - is it actually out of service? What parts remain in service and how is the nearby yard accessed? https://www.google.com/maps/place/Linden,+NJ/@40.6376967,-74.2442835,2918m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x89c3b310880c1167:0x7decc01de2f073f8!6m1!1e1?hl=en /Mitch Date: 02/09/16 17:31 Re: "Slot Train Racing" - Amtrak & NJT at Linden, NJ Author: Mgoldman While we're at it - anyone able to identify the train just by looking at it?
Time stamp shows 3:39 PM on 1-27-2016. Fresh snow, blue skies and a telephoto lens - it was just too good to pass up! /Mitch Date: 02/09/16 17:39 Re: "Slot Train Racing" - Amtrak & NJT at Linden, NJ Author: GenePoon 97(27), Silver Meteor. Three sleepers and a diner.

here's a Slot Train ... used in track maintenance on Amtrak ... Date: 02/09/16 17:48 Re: "Slot Train Racing" - Amtrak & NJT at Linden, NJ Author: Lackawanna484 I believe the overhead bridge is indeed the SIRT connection to Staten Island Junction. Parts of the line have been used for car storage.

OK, I'll bite; What's a "Slot Train"? /Mitch Posted from Android Date: 02/09/16 18:38 Re: "Slot Train Racing" - Amtrak & NJT at Linden, NJ Author: CCT41 Some Amtrak 640 trivia for you, the 640 was used to make the sound samples for Kato's N Scale ACS64. The crew from Soundtraxx and Kato spent 2 days at the SIEMENS factory in Sacramento. I was the commissioning engineer at that time, and we all had a great time making the recordings with the 640.

It is a long distance train. The Crescent runs not that far ahead of the Meteor so the sun would have struck it similarly, but it carries only two sleepers. The Silver Starvation has no diner. Three sleepers and a diner is what really does it. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/09/16 19:10 by GenePoon. Amtrak contracts a few of them for use on the NEC ... nice photo BTW ... http://www.georgetownrail.com/Rail-Solutions/Material-Handling/SlotMachine Edited 1 time(s). Sometimes four. Although it's theoretically possible to have six trains in view (A 1 2 3 4 B), I have never seen more than five at one time, facing in one direction. Posted from Android |
