Awesome video - your train was really moving along - was it a Highliner?
That freight train was very long, but where were the engines? No where in sight. It's like CN was punishing Amtrak with that stupid move.

I think that after the head of the freight, there was part of it, along with engines, on a track off to the right.  Maybe they were setting out a car.  Makes you wonder why Amtrak got put up behind it, though.

Amtrak should send CN a bill for the mainteance and fuel costs of hauling all those dead baggage cars around on account of their deficient signal system.

I don't think their signal system is deficient.  I think they want to give passenger train operations a hard time.  Same thing in Canada.

maybe the freight was running ahead of the train and suddenly a b/o car caused it to stop.  and maybe, just maybe, the cn crew was ATTEMPTING to s/o the b/o car and clear-up for amtrak a.s.a.p........

I suppose there could be special or particular circumstances for why the Saluki was brought right up behind the freight, including an unanticipated problem with the freight train... but on that double track (and more) main north of Homewood it isn't like there is a ton of traffic. It seems somewhat baffling that a passenger train wouldn't be able to weave through.

but where were they putting it if it was a BO ??? ... looking at the PCs of the line from Riverdale north and through the interlocking, where the heaend was, is a nb left to right non complete interlocking ... they were lined north all the way over to the far track cleared past the signal 2nd and were reversing south and lined onto the 2nd track from the right ... they were past the crossover switch and were reversing with the cndr on point of the boxcar  ... ya have to wonder where they going ... the track they were reversing on is a main track and there was really nowhere to setoff any cars ...

nice headend video ...

Yes one wonders who is doing what to who as in Klamath Fallls last week the station track that they use was plugged well before Amtrak was due. At that point it was running two hours late when leaving Dunsmur they made up an hour along the way. Then what? Well it sat outside of Klamath Falls OR for an hour waiting for the track and ended up pulling out two hours late. Yup Uncle Pete fixed it on that one.

This is multiple track, CTC territory.  Interlockings all over the place.  They could've backed the Amtrak train up, put it on a different track, and had it run by the freight, probably following the train from which the video was taken.  Not a complicated move.

Looks like the dispatcher decided to use that track for storage due to the fact there was no power on the freight. Interesting!

There is power, you can see it on another track doing a reverse move with a conductor on the rear.

Regular occurrence all the way from Centralia to Homewood.  Remember, CN is in a p**sing match with Amtrak over OTP issues, and is being a corporate jerk over it.

I bet Amtrak's T & E crews are really enjoying that run these days. Reminds me of how the UP used to be back in the early 2000s. Screw Amtrak every chance they get. Not sure what the epiphany was between Amtrak and UP, but one day that all changed. Maybe someday the same will happen between Amtrak and CN. One can only hope.

 AND THEY WANT NS  ???

Re: Saluki cooling its wheels

UP was particularly angry at the Amtrak's "freight". Some personalities changed. Gene Skoropowski performed miracles with UP on the west coast. Maybe then UP saw we were not lunatics.

Ummmm, no.  It's the CP that wants NS.

That freight train didn't look exactly like a high priority manifest either!
