Passenger Trains > Amtrak on Tehachapi Monday

Amtrak is running a special train north out of LAX Monday to Bakersfield and beyod. It will include the full - length dome car "Ocean View."
Purpose of the trip is unknown by me.

the thread below this says Boardman  left DC on Thursday for a transconintal trip.  Perhaps this is the special train?

Bingo.  Equipment (the AMTK 156 and Company Service cars) arrived this morning on
Train 3(27)...the ONLY Southwest Chief to come CLOSE to arriving Los Angeles on
schedule in four days, and tomorrow's arrival is looking mighty bad (should the train be
called the Southwest Grief?)

The Special Train will overnight in Modesto on the M&ET. 
Tuesday afternoon, will go to Sacramento, overnight there for two nights.
Thursday June 2, to Oakland with the AMTK 670, the last Amtrak ACS-64.
Thursday June 4 to Denver on Train 6, AMTK 670 scheduled to come along. 
Monday June 6, depart Denver on Train 6 to Chicago, same-day transfer of
the Company Service cars to the Cardinal, Train 50(7).

The cars Beech Grove, the Great Dome and a Viewliner Sleeper  were at 8th Street under the shed on track 3 along the Los Angeles River.

Wow, I'd like to win the lottery, and get my hands on a dome car like the one that rode into LA behind unit 156!

well, anyway, i think it's just nifty that short timer joe's cash starved, safety challenged railroad is able to send him on this critical mission.  maybe the next ceo for amtrak will ride along with rest of us in steerage

At least when David Gunn took his farewell tour around the system, it was a full-fledged Coast Starlight that carried his single office car from Oakland down to Los Angeles across Tehachapi Pass, so the passengers got to ride along, too.

Apparently this isn't even Boardman's farewell junket.  There is another one planned, a tour that
will visit every major crew base nationwide. 

W. Graham Claytor, when he traveled on company business, would usually go by himself, sometimes
with a member of local management.  He rode in roomettes and took meals in the diner, sharing his
table like everybody else. That was how I had dinner with him, which stretched out to include a Dutch door
ride that evening and late night drinks in the lounge car.

That evening, and another one with Bob Crandall of American Airlines, were the two most stimulating
I have ever had.  Crandall was riding in a First Class seat on an American DC-10 with the paying
passengers, even though American had a private jet contract operation at the time.

The truly great do not need a private jet or a four-business-car consist.  They do not need to posture. 
They carry their own greatness with them.

 

With Amtrak's budget reportedly being untold millions in the hole, how can this excursion of Boardman's even be remotely justified? What kind of a message does this send to the working stiffs at Amtrak who are constantly being asked to do more with less?

I thought I read somewhere else that they were going to return east on the Empire Builder. If that was the case I was wondering if they'd show up at Minot at about the same time as High Iron Travel's Front Range Explorer.

So is this train actually running? Any reports on when it's leaving?

If the purpose is to head to Sacramento to smash a champaign bottle over 670's coupler, why didn't they simply take #5 to start with ?

I decided to sit this one out because I didn't feel like driving up toward Modesto on Memorial Day, but I've been following the play-by-play on Facebook.

The train took the BNSF out from LA and is currently somewhere west of Barstow.

The cars will move east from Oakland, not the empire builder.

He is meeting with Congressman Jeff Denham and the new San Joaquin Valley Rail Authority at the ME&T - supposedly it's a public meeting, so here is your opportunity to voice your concerns..
