NP Dome Car In Chicago
Author: 12andTow

Anyone know anything about a NP Dome Car at the old EJ&E Kirk yard yesterday? I was just getting out of a cab when I got this grab shot of PAX 550. I saw it there on Monday but could not get a photo. I think it is Homestake Pass PAXX 9407. The only markings on it was PAX and 550 on one side.
Not sure where it was heading but it looked like there was no seats other than what was in the dome. I looked like fresh paint also.
Sorry about the crappy photo.

Heading to a lease at the museum in Duluth, MN. Car was painted at a shop in KY.  There's already been a thread or 2 about this move.

Nice paint job. Pictures on the paxrail website show it in stainless steel.
"=14pxA sister car to the Stampede Pass=14px, it was built as dome-coach #550 by the Budd Company in 1954. Owned by the Northern Pacific Railway, it ran on the North Coast Limited=14px until it was acquired by Amtrak in 1971. It was sold into private ownership in 1995 as Amtrak divested itself of its heritage fleet. The car ran on the American Orient Express in the late-1990s and into the 2000s as the American Spirit=14px before being leased to the Alaska Railroad, where it ran from 2005-2007. The car ran in a variety of excursion service from 2007-2014 before being acquired by Paxrail in 2015 and named Homestake Pass=14px. The car features 66 coach seats, 20 of which are dome seats.  Homestake Pass=14px will be undergoing renovations during the winter, and will be available for lease throughout 2016."

The Duluth museum will have a pretty respectable NP passenger train with the addition of this. I don't think they have appropriate power for the train, one wonders about the two ex-NP F-unit rotary plow power units that were or are parked outside at West Burlington, painted in mineral red but otherwise fairly intact. How nice would THAT look? === === = === JLH

The Northern Pacific Homestake Pass is Paxrail's second dome- and is headed to Duluth for the summer. You'll be able to ride it at the North Shore Scenic Railroad on their Duluth Zephyr trains. Soon the car will have full NP decals, brand new lounge chairs downstairs (as well as full table seating upstairs) and will haul passengers all summer long out of Duluth. Paxrail's other dome, North Coast Limited CB&Q pool dome Stampede Pass has just come off a busy spring behind 611 and 765 on those organizations' trips. Look for Stampede Pass to spend some more time on the rails in July- with plenty of opportunity to ride it. The best place to keep up to date on both cars' comings and goings is on the Paxrail Facebook page.

The Northern Pacific car was remanufactured by:
Crossroads Railcar Services, Inc. 3017 State Highway 1651  Stearns, KY

Check out the pictures on their Facebook page.  They have not yet organized a webpage.

You can see the Stampede Pass in my post on 765's trip to Janesville here: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4059066

The NP letters aren't big enough on Stampede Pass...
