Passenger Trains > A near miss of Cabbage Units 90229 & 90208 side by side at LAUPT

This Morning I almost got the two Cabbage Units at LA Union Station.

But as Amtrak train 565 was arriving. Amtrak Train 1568 was just starting to highball.

Nice catch! I have to admit it's pretty exciting spotting one a San Joaquin.

What time of day was it; looks like later afternoon? Thanks in advance!

I remember seeing 229 as power on the San Diegans quite a bit in the late 90s. It is definitely in familiar territory.

Too bad you missed.Could have made cole slaw!

No common to see two Cab/baggage cars in service at the same time in LA. Most of the time there is only one low level equipment set used on the Pacific Surfliner route. During the Comic-Con event in San Diego (plus the Del Mar horse racing) a 6 car Horizon set made a round trip between LA and San Diego, It was to add additional capacity during the 4 days (Thursday-Sunday) when travel would be heavy.

There was one problem on Saturday when too many passenger choose the extra train to go to Solana Beach (Del Mar) and San Diego instead of No. 768 which ran about an hour ahead of No. 1568 (the extra train) and had extra cars added as it usual for the Del Mae season. A good crowd was waiting for 1568 at Irvine when it was announced that the train was full and would taken only Business Class passenger with reservation on the train. Regular passenger had to wait about an hour and twenty minute for the next train or find another way to get to Del Mar before the first post time.

768 had 12 Cars on it. Ten was all Surf and Superliner mix. 
I guess they couldnt run 1568 at the current at the time.
768 is running during the race season.
