NY announces a decision on replacing the L subway tunnel
Author: march_hare

Good article on an upcoming major rehab project in the NYC subway system:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2016/07/25/the_l_train_shutdown_will_be_a_nightmare_but_also_a_blessing_in_the_long.html

For those of you not familiar, the L train goes from Brooklyn into lower Manhattan, where it follows 14th street all the way across the island.  In recent years, the neighborhoods on the Brooklyn end have transformed markedly and ridership has grown enormously.  So much so that at times, an L train is essentially a unit train of hipsters.  (Maybe during the 18 month shutdown that is to come, they can equip the Manhattan stations with rotary dumpers like the power plants use?  That would speed up the process, perhaps)

For perspective, note that the L train by itself carries almost as many people as the entire BART system.

That's pretty funny and also pretty true.

The article reports weekday ridership on the NY MTA's L as 225,000.  BART weekday ridership, systemwide, is at about 450,000.  The numbers may not be directly comparable, but they are not essentially similar at first glance.

The L train is especially popular with many hipster types who live in Brooklyn, but work in Manhattan. Especially in the Union Square area, at 14th street.  There's a lot of media business presence there, so anything that directly affects media people gets an outsized amount of press.

(Not unlike the "cute blond cheeleader vanishes" stories getting huge coverage, and people who don't fit that description getting no attention at all...)

I'll have to ask my daughter if that is the line she rides to work.
