Amtrak's Crescent threads its way through a series of switches as it cuts in front of a freight train on its way out of Birmingham this afternoon.

Amtrak trains have no personality - they all look the same - with the exception of an additional sleeper.

This interlocking was known as the "Puzzle Switches" back in the 1970's - may still have the same name.

look at that heritage diner.  does crescent have full diner service or is it that experimental gas-station food garbage?

It's a former Southern Pacific diner, still looking good 66 years after delivery. Here it is a day before. I
